The importance of play

Comments| Posted in News Women's Cycling Guest Bloggers By Juliet Elliott, Award Winning Blogger and Multi-Talent!

Leaving play behind in childhood is a big mistake. We adults can really benefit from time spent engaged in voluntary, pleasurable activity with no specific goal. So how should we play as adults?

(A blog for our overseas friends!)

It may not have escaped your notice that in June the UK voted to leave the European Union. Whilst this has prompted unprecedented levels of political, economic and social tumoil in the UK, it does have one undeniable upside if you're a cyclist living outside the UK.

What's that, you ask? Buying cycling gear from VeloVixen just got a whole lot cheaper, that's what!

Here are the main reasons why...

The 2016 Total Women's Cycling Awards are looming, and we're lucky enough to have been nominated once again - this time in the Best Cycling Retailer category. We're very much the minnow up against the big fish in cycling, and it would mean the world to us to win! Here's how you can vote...

Are you coming, are you coming?!?!

This month marks our biggest contribution yet to the momentum within women's cycling, as we host our star-studded VeloVixen Women's Cycling Hub - it promises to be one of the highlights of the NEC Cycling Show, running from September 22nd-25th...

It's been a blur of elite GB success and medals, all set against the impossibly glamorous backdrop of Rio de Janeiro. We've never seen elite success like it. Faster, higher, stronger has never rung truer than in 2016.

But are technical achievements of sublime prowess what we'll remember it for. Are they really? The reality is that, whilst we sit slack-jawed watching trampolining skills and cycling power we can't begin to relate to, that's not what moves us. That's not what we will reflect on with lumps in our throats watching montages years from now.

It's the humanity.

So here we are, my final Half an Iron Woman blog post – I’ve done it, challenge completed, money raised, limbs starting to recover, toe nail fallen off…now what? Well first, let me tell you how it went.

How do you feel about the colour pink?  After years of being tainted with negative press, it seems that loving pink has become a real "marmite" kind of question.

In April, we spent three memorable days in Bristol shooting for our next catalogue. The sun shone on us - in every sense - and we laughed a lot. We hope you get the idea from our behind-the-scenes video...

We're delighted to announce that VeloVixen is to sponsor a major men's UCI cycling team for the remainder of this season. After examining a number of ways to maximise the impact of our recent investment, we have decided to expand our reach by putting the VeloVixen name to an established men's squad.

We are unable to reveal either the names of the riders involved or the event calendar for the new team before later this month, but rest assured the new VeloVixen team will be looking to compete with the very best.

We're delighted to announce that, for the first time since we launched in August 2012, we have agreed a deal to bring in external investment. On March 21st, Bath-based Chelverton Asset Management, through a syndicate of private investors, agreed to invest £500,000 of growth capital into VeloVixen.

It's that time of year, isn't it? Yes, people are still wearing down jackets and anyone in their right mind on a bike is still layering up. But there's the scent of summer promised in the air. Buds are surreptitiously appearing on trees. The daffodils are strutting their stuff more confidently than those cheeky ones that popped up in January. You can even catch an occasional waft of cut grass as you ride.

We're feeling especially perky at VeloVixen.

Why's that, you ask? We have plans... and big news. And they're likely to have repercussions for women's cycling beyond VeloVixen itself. Here's what lies ahead for the months to come (it's worth reading to the end with this one...).

London Bike Kitchen have reached a critical point in their journey by being offered the opportunity to expand their services to a second workshop. This new workshop would be a godsend for the organisation, but they need your help to get there...

We're so lucky. Every week we hear from a new brand somewhere offering (almost always) innovation, style and passion. It's a constant luxury to see what's emerging on the market - and then to choose what should be added to the VeloVixen ranks.

Every so often, though, the decision practically makes itself. That's what happened with As Bold As. And we're celebrating the arrival of As Bold As by giving you the chance to win a Roadster Jacket (above) worth £116!

Let's Hear it for the Boys!

I fear I have committed a crime against women’s cycling. This weekend I had the choice of riding with a group of women or a group of men. And I chose the latter...

Let’s face it: this time of year isn’t exactly peak season for cycling.

It’s cold. It’s wet. It’s dank. Daylight hours are almost non-existent. And frequently there’s ice on the ground. To say nothing of that residual Christmas pudding clogging up both arteries and will-power.

It’s hardly a recipe for joyful times on your bike. Or is it?

Bikeless

There are unfortunate and unavoidable times in your life when you’ll find yourself separated from your beautiful bicycle. Maybe you’re on a short break and it wasn’t worth paying the extra air fare; maybe you’re staying with relatives and there’s no room for the bike; or perhaps it had to go into the workshop. What on earth do you do?!

Here’s some of my favourite things when I suddenly find myself bike-less...

The Evil Inside

Above: it should be all about the mutual support

Back in September Adele Mitchell brought to our attention a perfect example of the gender gap and sexism lurking within the cycling industry, with her Sockgate’, sexism and women’s cycling blog.

However, it’s my experience that some of the worst offenders in continuing to make women feel uncomfortable and alienated within cycling are actually other women.

A New Year's Resolution You'll Actually Enjoy

Comments| Posted in News Women's Cycling Guest Bloggers By Juliet Elliott, Award Winning Blogger and Multi-Talent!

With the brand new, shiny, happy, fresh new year already a week old, it's a time for us to reflect on the changes we’d like to make in our lives. I’m not sure that making yourself feel bad is neccessarily the best start to a year, so how about making a resolution that has nothing to do with deprivation and everything to do fun?

My idea still delivers self-improvement in spades, but does so almost by accident; it’s a treat rather than a punishment...
