In 2010, before setting up VeloVixen, we cycled over 10,000km through the Americas. We wore exclusively Icebreaker merino tops, and - hand on heart - can say there's nothing in VeloVixen's range we've tested harder or been more impressed by.  Merino is 100% natural, it helps keep you warm in the cold and vice versa, and you can wash it endlessly without it losing its wonderful colours or shape.  It dries fast and you can wear it for days on end without it getting smelly.  It is truly miraculous stuff.

This model is ideal either as a base layer or to wear on top with pride.  Its 200 weight merino is roughly the weight of a cotton t-shirt, but so much more adaptable and comfortable for day to day use.  You'll struggle to find a more useful piece of clothing.  It comes from the merino flocks of New Zealand's Southern Alps.  It's not the cheapest top around, but - believe us - you won't regret it.  In this case, you really do get what you pay for.

Geek's Corner
  • Dry: Icebreaker merino pulls moisture vapour to the surface of the fabric, where it evaporates before the vapour turns into sweat. It can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture before you even start to feel wet, and it dries fast
  • Lightweight: Icebreaker’s merino has an exceptionally high warmth-to-weight ratio. The fine, lightweight fibres give you all the warmth of a heavy sweater – without the bulk
  • Breathable: Synthetic fibres feel clammy because moisture vapour can escape only through holes in the fabric. But with Icebreaker merino, the fibre as well as the fabric breathes to prevent you overheating
  • Odour Resistant: Icebreaker merino resists odour naturally, and can be worn for days — even weeks — without washing
  • 3% lycra component allows the fit and shape to remain constant over the years, and also helps accelerate drying

More about why Icebreaker merino is so ingenious:

How Icebreaker merino works:

Who's Behind It?

Icebreaker are the world's premier merino manufacturer.  In 1994, an American girlfriend introduced Jeremy Moon to Brian Brackenridge, a merino sheep farmer she’d stayed with while hitchhiking around New Zealand.  Across the table, Brian threw Jeremy a prototype thermal t-shirt made from 100% merino wool.

“It felt soft and sensual, looked lustrous and was totally natural,” says Jeremy. “It was nothing like the wool I had grown up with, which was heavy and scratchy. And you could throw this stuff in the washing machine.”

Jeremy, then a 24-year-old marketing graduate, wondered if he could sell enough of the prototype fabric to visit his girlfriend in the US.  But when he wore the t-shirt in the outdoors, he became so enthusiastic about merino’s potential that he never saw his girlfriend again – she was jilted for a sheep (actually, a whole flock of them).  Working from his HQ – his bedroom – Jeremy wrote a business plan with the crazily ambitious goal of developing the world’s first merino layering system for the outdoors, and creating a global business in the process.  Synthetics dominated outdoor clothing, and you could barely give merino away. “Don’t talk to me about wool. Wool is dead,” a buyer told Jeremy on his first sales call.

Today, they are a global business, but their ethical and environmental focus, including animal welfare, is second to none.
