Think of a base layer like you do your vest. It's an essential part of everyday life when the cold weather comes to town, preventing draughts and keeping you nice, warm and all tucked in. On your bike, you will need something a little more technical though and this is just the thing...
A Showers Pass Body-Mapped Base Layer is made of a custom blend fabric; Merino wool, for its warmth and zero-smell qualities, Spandex for its superb fit and stretch, Modal for its soft luxurious feel and Nylon for its strength and durability. All in all, this base is one tough cookie.
The venting design is pretty clever and mirrors the core and back vents featured in most Showers Pass jackets. With an open knit pattern that's mapped in areas you'll likely sweat the most from (pits and down the middle of the back) excess heat can escape quickly, so you can ride temperature happy. Multiple knit patterns have been achieved, without incurring seams along the torso, by using a circular knitting machine, originally designed for making socks - which we think is wonderful.
Designed to be form fitting with 4-way stretch, so you can move as you wish, without your base constricting you in any way. Its long torso, wide hem and long sleeves with thumb loops make this base more than suitable for cycling, commuting or a hike up the Pennines. Perfect coverage on the saddle and plenty of length to tuck in if you please.
Showers Pass also state that this base layer will NOT shrink in the dryer. Yipee! Washed, dried and ready for day two.

Back in 2010, our founders Liz and Phil found themselves in a bike shop in Seattle whiling away a wet afternoon. They were part way through a year long trip, dodging rain because Liz hadn’t yet found a decent waterproof.
And then it happened. She fell into a Showers Pass waterproof jacket that fitted both her and her pocket, and promised to keep her dry and comfortable through the worst that the American North West could throw at her. That jacket became Liz’s favourite piece of kit and is still in use to this day.
From Day 1 of VeloVixen, we’ve been waiting for the moment we could stock Showers Pass. In 2013 they expanded into the UK, setting up home in South Shields. They’re slowly developing a small network of hand-picked retailers, never wanting to jeopardise the fantastic repution they’ve built up in the USA.
Based in Oregon, USA, Showers Pass was born from the desire to develop clothing and gear to get more people out on their bikes, no matter the weather.
Inspired by the challenging rides and variable conditions of Northern California and the Pacific Northwest, Showers Pass continue to combine high performance materials with innovative functional design for cyclists, just as they have since 1997. Best known for their exceptional waterproof-breathable outerwear, they aim to help racers, commuters, messengers and the everyday cycling enthusiasts power through the elements.
