‘Sockgate’ - Sexism and Women’s Cycling

Posted in Opinions By Adele Mitchell, popular writer and cycling blogger

Why the cycling industry needs to pay proper attention to women.

For those who don’t know already, ‘sockgate’ came about after Interbike – a Las Vegas based bike trade show – included socks adorned with an image of g-string wearing women in its official attendees’ ‘goody bag’.

A social media war has raged as a result: on one side those – women and men - who cite it as the tip of a sexist cycling iceberg, on the other the usual round of ‘where’s your sense of humour/doesn’t offend me/where can I get a pair’ comments.

Strength in numbers

Posted in By Adele Mitchell, popular writer and cycling blogger

I’m standing in the kitchen with my bike, mug of tea in hand, watching the rain through the window. It’s my day off, and I’m due to meet three girl friends – Alice, Claire and Chrissy - for a mountain bike ride in exactly half an hour. Help! My bike has more beauty products than I do.

Posted in Style Guides By Adele Mitchell, popular writer and cycling blogger

I also seem to have acquired a staggering array of bike cleaning brushes – some ‘borrowed’ from my bathroom, including a toothbrush (not my current toothbrush, by the way) for the chain and a fan shaped make up powder brush that expertly sweeps away mud from hard to reach bearings (even my bike-mad husband looked a bit surprised when he saw me using that one).

Meanwhile, in my actual bathroom, there is something of a beauty crisis going on.
