If you've never done an ounce of cycle touring before there's going to be a lot of learning along the way. Sister duo, Rose and Robyn completed their 1800 mile journey in one piece, but what essential do's and do-not's did they bring back with them?

It's that time of year, isn't it? Yes, people are still wearing down jackets and anyone in their right mind on a bike is still layering up. But there's the scent of summer promised in the air. Buds are surreptitiously appearing on trees. The daffodils are strutting their stuff more confidently than those cheeky ones that popped up in January. You can even catch an occasional waft of cut grass as you ride.

We're feeling especially perky at VeloVixen.

Why's that, you ask? We have plans... and big news. And they're likely to have repercussions for women's cycling beyond VeloVixen itself. Here's what lies ahead for the months to come (it's worth reading to the end with this one...).

The Aviva Women’s Tour is now established as arguably the biggest UK event for women's cycling. After the last 6-deep crowds and excitement of 2014's inaugural event, the anticipation leading up to the event is palpable. VeloVixen’s own Rose Osborne (shown here doing the hard work!) has been racing alongside many of the peloton this year - to whet your appetite, here’s her insider’s view on life in the women’s peloton…

Women's cycling is full of impressive characters. Speed demons, wordsmiths, figureheads, household names, business leaders and unsung heroines. A glance through last month’s BikeBiz list of  the ‘100 Women of the Year’ was enough to prove that. But there can’t be many more worthy of inclusion on that list, or more passionate and knowledgeable about women’s cycling, than Kirsty Hofat.

As she leaves VeloVixen for now to take on a new passion – her and Gav’s imminent baby – she will be truly missed at VeloVixen and beyond.

There's a real momentum in women's cycling at the moment. And at VeloVixen we're right in the thick of it. Or (removing modesty hat for a moment) at the front.

We're still a tiny team, though, and we have so many plans. So we need help! We're after a Communications Manager and an Inventory Controller. An organised approach, a creative mind, and the ability to turn your hand to a ridiculous variety of tasks. These are just a few of the attributes we're after for any role. Oh, and a sense of humour. That's crucial...

Last night we had dinner at Heathrow Terminal 5. Were we off somewhere glam for an exotic mini-break? No. Were we collecting an old friend from overseas? Nope. Arriving back from a fortnight in the Caribbean? Fat chance.

No, we were marking an important occasion. It was 5 years to the hour since a departure that was to shape us, our lives and VeloVixen forever.

The VeloVixen Team

We're incredibly lucky to have a uniquely strong, talented team here at VeloVixen. A bunch of fools that genuinely care about each other and about dealing properly with people. Here we are...

Liz Bingham (Co-Founder & Strategic Director)

Former Life: Mixing life as a professional actress with life on the road as a professional tour guide. Juggled seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company and television roles with the challenges of keeping educational groups of American teenagers under control.

Epiphany: Meeting Phil on a blind date in 2009.

Cycling Experience: Pottering round Cambridge in the 1990s. Oh, and riding 10,000km through South America and the US with Phil.

Today: Liz juggles (still juggling!) her role as VeloVixen Strategic Director with moonlighting in cycling event organisation and being a full-time mum to Zoe and Emma.

Phil Bingham (Co-Founder & Managing Director)

Former Life: Sitting at a desk and travelling the world managing portfolios of hedge funds - whilst covertly plotting exotic cycling trips and other adventures.

Epiphany: Meeting Liz on a blind date in 2009 (see above). And leaving his job shortly thereafter...

Cycling Experience: Land's End to John O'Groats, Ironman triathlon, various Etapes, the whole route of the 100th Tour de France and a little ride with Liz in 2010 (see above).

Today: Phil manages VeloVixen day-to-day whilst being as hands-on a dad as possible to Zoe and Emma. And planning the odd ride here and there. If he's good, a couple of times year he gets to see another male.

The Fat Unicorns: Matt Wild & Vic Whitaker (Website Gurus)

Former Life: The Unicorns have been around for many years, sprinkling their Unicorn Magic on numerous projects.

Epiphany: Recognising they were work and play soulmates.

Cycling Experience: any time you find these two loons away from the keyboard, you can be sure they'll be on a bike, snowboard, surfboard or rockface somewhere.

Today: Matt and Vic are sublime creators of websites - from the Unicorn's nest in Lancashire, they devise ever more fiendish ways to bring sites to life and make them work better and more beautifully.

Fran Whyte (Operations Manager)

Former Life: If you've been arrested in the Oxford area in recent years, there's a fair chance that Fran was the one wielding the truncheon (she's a big softy really). She was one of the boys girls in blue, for almost 13 years until she realised that cycling was here true calling. And especially cycling kit. Don't even ask about her wardrobe.

Epiphany: Realising that police work wasn't leaving enough time for cycling. Or holidays. Luckily life at VeloVixen is one long cycling holiday (so we tell her).

Cycling Experience: Fran's rarely off a bike, whether it's climbing a Dolomite, finishing yet another Ironman triathlon, ripping up a Welsh MTB trail or rolling in cyclocross mud.

Today: Fran is in charge of our warehousing and order processing. You'll often find her on the end of a phone with her peerless line in sensible cycling kit advice.

Andrew Blakeley (Finance)

Former Life: Andrew has sorted out the numbers for many and various firms over the years, in worlds ranging from helicopters to bathrooms. Cycling shouldn't be a problem.

Epiphany: The realisation that renovating your own house entirely didn't mix well with a traditional full time job!

Cycling Experience: We're working on luring Mr B onto a bike for the first time in a while... watch this space.

Today: Andrew is a voice of pragmatism and reason in the cacophony of women's cycling - he does the important bits. And he's fast developing a penchant for ladies' lycra.

Alex Whitaker (Copy Writer)

Former Life: Now the crucial third leg of the Fat Unicorns (3-legged unicorns...? Hmmm), Alex has a tendency to take on a job, do it far better than her employers expected and end up running the show!

Epiphany: Being headhunted to VeloVixen by her own sister, Vic!

Cycling Experience: Alex is rapidly getting the bug, led by her love of nice looking kit - we're all watching to see which cycling route she takes...!

Today: Alex is largely responsible for the product description that you read - and for getting them up and visible in the first place. She somehow stays sane, despite often having only cycling jerseys for company during her working day!

Rose 'Ozzie' Osborne (Office Manager / Pro Cyclist)

Former Life: Rose graduated with flying colours from Bath University in 2014 and decided to devote herself to the church cycling. Making a living in women's pro cycling is no easy feat, however, so we're lucky she spends plenty of time with us too!

Epiphany: deciding to give pro cycling a serious go in 2015.

Cycling Experience: Unlike most of us, Rose is a 'proper' cyclist - regular club rides and now moving up the ranks as part of UCI pro Team Drops Cycling.

Today: splits her time between VeloVixen, where she takes care of customers and suppliers, and Drops where she takes care of the opposition.

Lauren Garrett (Logistics)

Former Life: A meticulously studious academic at Oxford Brookes Uni, rarely surfacing from her books. Kinda.

Epiphany: When she first clipped into pedals early in 2016... the rest has been rapidly evolving history.

Cycling Experience: More by the day - Lauren is a fully-fledged born-again cycling addict. We've offered her treatment for it.

Today: Lauren manages to mix life as a student with long hours buried in our warehouse. And if you order a Deliveroo meal in Oxford, don't be surprised if it's her knocking on your door.

Zoe & Emma Bingham (Roving Ambassadors / Product Testers)

Former Life: What?!

Epiphany: Being born into a cycling family...

Cycling Experience: Until recently Zoe's been restricted to her 3-wheeled scooter, but is now showing promise on two wheels (albeit with stabilisers). Emma's still observing.

Today: Zoe (4) is the senior member of our youth squad, having been joined by her little sister in late 2014. Their role is constantly evolving. Both ladies take their role as Roving Ambassador very seriously - with new roving techniques including... 'running around doing funny things'. Zoe is now showing more active managerial potential - at least when it comes to managing her parents. Emma has recently developed scooter envy.

At VeloVixen we are lucky to have the support of several wonderful women who cycle regularly and who inspire us. Each of them wants to help to encourage, cajole and support women to get back on their bikes ('back', because everyone has ridden a bike at some point!). We work with them to help spread the cycling gospel amongst women around the UK. Please let us know if you know of anyone who should be a VeloVixen 'ambassador'! Here is a little about them:
