Hommage au Vélo realise that not everyone wants to wear black so have created their Alfonsina bib shorts in both navy and black. Obviously it's not just the colour options that lured us in to stocking this new UK brand, but predominately the substance behind the french-inspired style.

At the heart of a good pair of bib shorts is the chamois and Hommage au Vélo have taken this on board with the creation of their women's specific GreenLime™ pad.

The pad is made from material that fends off bacteria and helps keep you as dry and fresh as possible. It's also designed so that most of the thickness of the pad sits below the surface, creating a cover that's free from folds or edges that could potentially cause chafing or nipping - a genius idea.

These Algonsina bib shorts are constructed from 6-panels to create a more flattering fit. Rather than one piece of material trying to shape to your body - there are 6, hugging and skimming in all the right places.

With a mid-length leg these bib shorts are suitable for most heights. So whether you're tall and struggle to find shorts long enough or short and find shorts that skim your knees - give these a go and they should fit well.

All in, these bib shorts are thoughtfully designed and will have you riding for miles in comfort.

What's in a name? Who was Alfonsina?

Alfonsina Strada remains to this day the only female cyclist to have started a full three-week men's professional Grand Tour: the 1924 Giro d'Italia.

Evidently as hard as nails, she crashed heavily as the race approached Naples and snapped her handlebars. Taking a broomstick from a spectating peasant, she jammed it into the remaining half of her handlebars and continued to the finish, only to miss the time cut and be eliminated. Alfonsina, we salute you.

Who's Behind It?

Hommage au Vélo is - contrary to what you might think from its name - a proudly British brand. With a French twist. David Laws is the francophile founder and designer. He's been in love with cycling man and boy, during which time he's ridden at the top level and lived, breathed and slept cycling even when working in other sectors.

How did Hommage au Vélo come about? In his own words:

"Hommage au Vélo was born out of a cycling obsession sparked in the early 1990’s in rural Kent and nurtured in the last decade of the “old days”, where secretive cycling clubs and steel frames crafted in the hands of a local frame builder were the raison d’être of the local rider. When Miguel Indurain was the extra-terrestrial and not Lance Armstrong. When cycling was a closed shop run by “old boys”, keen to pull rank on newcomers, blind to developments in fashion and popular culture and yet admirably ordered and protective of their own.

"In the subsequent 25 years, we have witnessed a full-scale revolution in the sport: the boom and bust of mountain bike racing, the rise and fall of Lance Armstrong, the obsolescence and revival of fluorescent colours, the emergence of Anglophone riders as a dominant force in world cycling, the return of hand built steel frames and the brilliant increase in women cycling."

Hommage au Vélo specialises in beautiful, simple designs, with the emphasis on top quality materials, fit and finish at a sensible price. It's understated, deeply stylish and just that little bit irreverent. If you like your kit to have real character, flair, and appreciation of female cyclists, then Hommage au Vélo should be part of your thinking.
