The Urban PrimaLoft gilet is the perfect commuter companion for the winter months. It's a lightweight and insulated gilet that can be worn on and off the bike. Although designed to be ridden in - with some nifty cycle-specific features - it's perfect for walking the dog, going to the shops or a nice lunchtime pootle.

Its cut is somewhere between slim and relaxed, you can fit a few layers beneath it, but the gilet doesn't billow as you ride. The hem is also dropped so your rear remains covered when you lean over to ride. Endura think of everything and have even found space to fit a couple of reflective details (primarily in the form of the rear strip) for a little added visibility. The quality is undoubted too, with a zip that's easy to pull up and down on the move (shielded underneath by a draught flap that stays handily out of the way), and fabric and seams that look well up to the task of multiple seasons' worth of work.

The front is where the bulk of the insulation sits, facing the wind, while there's the tiniest amount on the rear to help with that slow speed insulation but it's clear that this is where the gilet is designed to be an all-day piece of kit. You never need take it off simply because it can help regulate your body temperature so well.

The jacket uses Primaloft for warmth, it's a highly insulating microfibre synthetic material that does a stellar job at keeping you toasty during single-digit commutes. If you look after the Primaloft insulation by washing it properly, it's going to pay you back in performance and utility. Thanks to its packable qualities, if it gets too warm you can stuff it in your backpack or pocket and pedal away no worries.

Endura are a Scottish company to the core - that means that they understand the British physique better than most. Whilst the cut of their products does vary (a premium road jersey will naturally be more fitted than a baggy MTB jersey) the sizing is very representative.

Endura - you see a lot of it around, don't you? So you may be guilty of assuming it's a bit... generic? Despite our founders Liz and Phil successfully using Endura kit on their2010 odysseyfor a while we were a little guilty of the same prejudice. Turns out nothing could be further from the truth, especially with a depth of female design talent in their ranks!

Endura was founded in Scotland in 1993 with a no-nonsense commitment to improving the performance and function of cycling kit for everyone. From the start, it was a maverick brand, with a stated philosophy of 'Renegade Progress'. Endura quickly launched a range of novel and challenging products that have gone on to earn iconic status within cycling and have frequently reset benchmark for function and durability for the industry.

Over a generation, all of this has seen Endura evolve from a proudly Scottish local brand to a global stalwart of the cycling sector. And with that has come the real fun. Today, they match great finish, fit and robustness with fabulous styles and colourways. And they're associated with some of the most exciting names in cycling.

If it's good enough for the likes of the Cervelo Bigla women's pro team, paralympians like Denise Schindler, Movistar's male megastars like Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde... then it's more than good enough for us!

And that's without mentioning arguably the most recognisable cycling star of them all: Scotland's own Danny MacAskill. This video gives a flavour of Danny in his home surroundings - using Endura to better effect than most of us can ever dream of...!
